Washington, D.C. 20554 Subject: FCC Profanity Complaint against Jimmy Swaggart and Broadcasters To the Enforcement Bureau: Jimmy Swaggart, a televangelist, stated to wild applause to a live audience that he would delight in killing a gay man who looked at him the wrong way. Referring to gay men and gay marriage, the exact words spoken were "I'll kill him and tell God he died." Such speech falls within the definition of profane speech as defined by the FCC. I wish to register a complaint against this obscenity in broadcasting. The statement was widely heard, not just in this country but all over the world. Television stations broadcasting Jimmy Swaggart's show are available from the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries website: http://www.jsm..org/html/body_live_programming.htm The Canadian broadcasting regulatory agency has already begun an investigation: http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?id=13787&sd=09/23/04 You may also be aware that gay people and other Americans have expressed their alarm over this statement in the printed media, on radio and TV, and on the internet. This statement in question was made September 12, 2004 during his regular broadcast in the time in which such speech is not protected on most stations which are members of the TBN network. The chairman of TBN, Paul Crouch, is already embroiled in a legal controversy related to gay issues. The statement was followed by strong, emotional endorsement for President Bush. Clearly the statement was intended to rouse fear and hatred and to motivate voting. As research and actual legal case law has shown, such language creates an atmosphere where gay bashing and anti-gay bias is deemed acceptable behavior, and Swaggart's death threat is the basis of the wide concern in the gay community.
